May 2010 Board Meeting Minutes

Houston Polymer Clay Guild
Board meeting minutes, Saturday, May 20, 2010

The meeting began at 12:10 p.m. Present were: Bob Wiley – President, Coordinator, Patricia Daugherty -- Education Coordinator,  Paula Kennedy – Secretary, Milli Jewell – Publicity Coordinator, and Tabiatha McKeever – Member-at-Large. Absent were Betsy Fraser – Vice-President and Ronalyn Hurley – Treasurer and Membership.

Treasurer’s and Membership reports: Ronalyn reported via email that the guild has $7,398.54 in the bank.  We have 57 paid members.

Education Report: Laurie Mika is scheduled to hold a two-day workshop August 14 & 15.  Patricia is working up the final workshop cost numbers.  Laurie charges $175/student, but she will be traveling in the area and her transportation costs should be low.  Patricia hopes to be able to keep the cost below $200.  There will also be a materials fee, but it is expected that most people will already have most of the materials, so it may be optional.

Paula’s scheduled Viking Wire Knit class on Saturday, June 12 is full.

Milli suggested that we have a beginner’s class on a regular basis.  She is willing to work up a syllabus for the class.

Future meetings:
May:  Bob will demo xerox transfers.
June:  Tabiatha will show how to make miniature food items.
July:  Bob will demo “invisible canes”
October  In recognition of the Quilt Festival, Betsy will demo quilt canes.
Betsy had asked Patricia to do a demo on her tile bracelet construction in September, but Patricia would rather do it in August.  She will check with Betsy when she is back in town.

Challenge: The October challenge will be “Faces

Events: Empty Bowls will be held at HCCC next Saturday, May 22.  HPCG has been asked to demonstrate during the event.  Paula, Milli and perhaps Bob will be there

Retreat: Paula made a motion that we accept the contract from South Shore Harbour Hotel for the retreat on September 30 – October 2, 2011.  The motion passed.
Patricia has confirmed Leslie Blackford as one of the retreat teachers.  She is working on getting Merrie Buchsbaum. Since Lindly Haunani lives in Hawaii, her travel expense may put her out of our budget.  As an alternative Patricia suggested Marla Frankenberg or Janet Farris.  We would offer the teachers $1000 for the weekend plus travel and meal expenses.

Sale: Bob has contacted Beadaholique on Louetta.  They would be happy to host a guild sale provided that we do not have a sale at Spring Beads within 4 months of the sale at their store

Logo Contest: The logo contest will be announced at the general meeting today.  Designs must be submitted to any board member by the October meeting.  The board will judge the winner who will receive a year’s free guild membership.

Purchasing Agent: The idea of having an official guild purchasing agent to coordinate group buys was tabled until the next meeting so that the treasurer’s opinion could be included in the discussion.

The meeting adjourned at 12:55 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
Paula Kennedy, secretary
