Houston Polymer Clay Guild
Board meeting minutes
Saturday, July 21, 2007
The meeting began at 11:40 a.m. Present were:
Bob Wiley – President, Rebecca Wells-Stout - Vice-President
and Demo Coordinator, Ronalyn Hurley – Treasurer and Membership
Coordinator, Paula Kennedy – Secretary, Meg Marchiando – Education
Coordinator, and Carmen Anderson – Member-at-Large.
Merry Maynard has resigned from the position of
Publicity Coordinator.
Ronalyn gave the treasurer’s report: We currently
have $10,110.63. Most of the deposits were payment for upcoming
classes. PayPal is working very well.
We currently have 48 members in the guild. Sixteen
of those are non-local members. We need a drawing card to bring
in more members. Bob will contact Donna Kato about possibly
coming to teach a stand-alone class or at the next retreat.
Carmen suggested that Ronalyn post a welcome to the Yahoo group
whenever a new member joins the guild.
Upcoming activities were discussed:
August 4 Hands on Houston at the Houston Center for Contemporary
Craft (HCCC) – Bob, Rebecca, Meg and Paula will attend the event.
The Center has asked that we do an activity related to the current
basket exhibition. We will do coiled baskets. We need to bring
pasta machine, extruder, tools, extension cord and power strip.
Meg and Rebecca will bring their ovens. The issue of portable
tables for such events was discussed. Rebecca suggested that
the guild buy a couple of folding tables.
August 18 HCCC Gathering of the Guilds – Bob,
Rebecca, and Carmen will represent the HPCG. Other board members
may drop in to help. We can sell items in the HCCC gift shop,
but they take 50% of the price.
September 15 Guild Meeting – Meg will demonstrate
her surface techniques. Rebecca suggested that we have a “Free
Cycle” at the September meeting. Members would bring any clay/craft
supplies or tools that they no longer want and would offer them
free to anyone who wants them. This is not a swap, just a give-away.
Rebecca made a motion that we have the free cycle, Meg seconded,
and all approved.
Clay Days at Webster Hobby Lobby. Bringing a work
light was recommended. Topics are:
July 28 – bugs
Sept. 8 – beads
The previously scheduled November date (Nov. 3) is the same
weekend as the quilt show. The Clay Day
will be canceled.
Classes: Oct. 5-7 Sherilyn Miller. Jill Kershner
will be able to host the class after all.
Nov. 10-11 Lynne Ann Schwarzenberg. The class is open for registration.
The class fee is $150.
Other business:
We need to replace Merry as Publicity Coordinator. Trish Hodgkins
was suggested.
The library purchasing procedures were discussed.
It was decided that it would be easiest if the librarian (or
any other member) gives a list of desired books and videos to
the treasurer who will then purchase the materials for the library.
This will make the money handling easier and avoid duplicate
purchases.
The Houston Bead Society has arranged with Bayou
Manor to store materials on site between meetings. Carmen will
check with Bead Society president Shirley Nowlin to see whom
to contact at Bayou Manor about the clay guild storing things
also or about sharing the Bead Society space.
Holiday Party: Rebecca agreed to coordinate the
Holiday Party on December 15 at Bayou Manor. All attendees will
be requested to bring food and a clay-related tool/material/supply
for the gift exchange.
Meeting Raffle: In order to make the raffle more
appealing, the board decided to change some aspects of it. The
winners will no longer be required to bring a replacement item
for the next raffle. The board will purchase items to stock
the raffle using the moneys collected in raffle ticket sales.
Meg moved that we present the changes to the general membership
for their approval, Ronalyn seconded, and all approved. Paula
was asked to purchase a double-barrel rock tumbler from Harbor
Freight Tools to place in the September raffle.
The meeting adjourned at 12:45 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Paula Kennedy, secretary
