August 2008 Board Meeting Minutes

Houston Polymer Clay Guild
Board meeting minutes, Saturday, August 16, 2008

The meeting began at 12:15 p.m. Present were: Bob Wiley – President, , Paula Kennedy – Secretary, Patricia Daugherty -- Education Coordinator and Betsy Fraser – Member-at-Large. Absent was Ronalyn Hurley – Treasurer and Membership Coordinator.

Treasurer’s report: There was no treasurer’s report.

Rebecca Wells-Stout has resigned from the board. Bob moved that Betsy Fraser move up into the position of Vice-President; Betsy accepted; and the motion passed. Bob will ask at the general meeting for a volunteer to fill the position of Member-at-Large.

Future meetings:
August: Betsy will present ideas on what to do with scrap clay. Because the Houston Bead Society will be conducting their mini-bazaar in our regular meeting room that day, we will meet in the “aquarium room.”
September: There will be no general meeting in September. The Houston Center for Contemporary Craft (HCCC) is holding Gathering of the Guilds on that day.
October: Patricia will do a demonstration on textures.
November: We will be covering switch plate with clay. Bob will demonstrate one method using rubber stamps and PearlX powders. Attendees can use that method or another of their own.
December: Holiday party

Classes/Workshops:
Laura Tabakman will teach a two-day workshop on October 4 & 5, 2008. Registration is underway. We have 8 registrants.

Maureen Carlson will be teaching a two-day workshop on February 7 & 8, 2009. Details to be announced.

Louise Fischer Cozzi will teach a workshop on May 16 & 17, 2009. There will be no regular guild meeting that day.

The Lone Star Retreat is scheduled for September 25-27, 2009 at the South Shore Harbor Hotel in League City.

Events:
HCCC will be holding their annual Gathering of the Guilds on September 20. The HPCG will man a demonstration table. There will be no regular guild meeting that day.

Challenges:
The challenge for October will be “black & white”. No other colors of clay will be allowed.
The challenge for January will be mixed media. There is minimum percentage of visible clay used.

Classes below minimum:
The board discussed whether the guild should pay for unfilled spaces for workshops in order to prevent cancellation. Patricia moved that the guild pay for 1 or 2 unfilled slots to achieve the minimum number for the class as a matter of course. If there are 3 or more unfilled slots the board will discuss whether to pay for the unfilled slots or to cancel the workshop. The motion passed.

Guild Sale: The board has been looking for a venue for members to sell their works. The lampworkers guild had a table at the annual bead show and sale at the Stafford Centre. Bob will see about the HPCG having a table at the next sale in Stafford.

Patricia is planning to investigate the “First Saturday in the Heights” as a possible sale venue.

The meeting adjourned at 1:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
Paula Kennedy, secretary
